Alpha-gal Syndrome – SAAT

What is Alpha-gal Syndrome?

A tick bite causes Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), the so-called ‘red meat’ allergy. The Lone Star tick causes sensitivity to a sugar molecule (galactose-α-1,3-galactose) found in most mammals. Alpha-gal is present in meats such as pork, beef, rabbit, lamb, and venison, as well as in products made from mammals (including gelatin, cow’s milk, and milk products).

The tick injects the alpha-gal carbohydrate, found in its saliva, into a person’s skin during feeding. In response, the person’s body will then release immunoglobulin E antibodies to combat the foreign substance’s presence. Later on, the person’s immune system may attack after they eat red meat and digest the Alpha-gal carbohydrate.

Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) can manifest as hives, swelling, stomach upset, diarrhea, stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, headaches, a drop in blood pressure, and also in certain individuals, anaphylaxis.

Those suffering from AGS may experience reactions to eating meat, meat fumes, or food products and cosmetics containing red meat byproducts hours after contact, making the cause of symptoms difficult to detect.

At Your SAAT Evaluation

We will first screen you for Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), as well as sensitivities to metals and adhesives. (If you have sensitivities to metals or adhesives, you may need a homeopathic course before beginning treatment.)

Once we identify which allergens to treat, we will place one tiny treatment needle for each reactive component, cover it with a bandage, and leave it in place for 3–4 weeks. (It is important to keep your ear dry while your needles are in place!) We can treat multiple allergens per evaluation.
